$300 million was cut from Michigan's education budget. School leaders are asking lawmakers to pass a supplemental budget to make up for the loss they did not see coming. While many districts will likely not have to make cuts this school year, administrators worry about funding in future years for positions such as counselors, nurses, and school resource officers if the money is not restored.
Michigan's Proposal A still creates inequities for districts across the state, which affects our comparative performance. The state expects districts to finance their facilities and operations through bonds and millages, which low-income and now politicized districts struggle to pass. For example, some districts must cancel school during extreme heat, limiting learning days.
Teacher shortages, substitute teacher shortages, transportation and bus driver shortages, and before + after school care shortages are a few of the issues Michigan needs to address to get our students to school and learn in appropriately sized classrooms.
